Our Dominion Mandate

Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth.” So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. And God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the air and over every living thing that moves upon the earth.”

Genesis 1:26-28

God created Man (all of humanity, male and female) in his own image and likeness. This means that the Almighty decided in his love and wisdom to share his DNA with humanity thus making us sharers of his divine nature and carriers of his glory. Image speaks of God’s divine nature. Nature is the basic inherent traits of a person- his essence. For example, it is in the nature of a dog to bark. Likeness speaks of resemblance.  Sharing God’s divine nature/DNA empowers us to produce divine likeness- character.

God blessed Adam and Eve and commanded them to be fruitful, to multiply and dominate the earth. The word Dominion is Radah in Hebrew and it means to reign, prevail against, to rule; to subjugate and to tread down. The question then is, what are we meant to subjugate? Fellow humans? Certainly not!, we have been called to rule and subjugate our carnal/sin nature in our souls and also exercise dominion over governmental structures of principalities and powers of darkness. We are to establish the authority and the rule of Christ. For the whole earth shall be full of God’s glory as the water covers the sea and we are the agency for the accomplishment of this dominion mandate.

Fruitfulness is the byproduct of image. God created us to share in his divine nature and this divine nature enable us to produce divine character- Christ likeness. Fruitfulness means spiritual growth and development of God’s character. When we align with his divine purpose then we become fruitful. We are on a journey as Christians and the endpoint of our journey is conformity to the image and likeness of Christ- Christ likeness. Distance in the spirit is covered through obedience; maturity is when we give up our own desires for the will of God.

The whole essence of our Christian life is to contend with our carnal desires of the flesh and subdue them; it is for the divine life to find expression in our humanity. Dominion is when we are able to subjugate our desires for revenge, our propensity towards bitterness, jealousy etc and instead allowing virtues like, mercy; forgiveness and unconditional love have preeminence. So, when God said in Genesis that we are to walk in dominion, he was in essence saying, shed off the carnal nature and create space for the divine life to blossom.

For You formed my inward parts; you covered me in my mother’s womb. I will praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are your works, And that my soul knows very well. My frame was not hidden from You, When I was made in secret, And skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed. And in Your book they all were written, the days fashioned for me, when as yet there were none of them. How precious also are your thoughts to me, O God! How great is the sum of them

Psalm 139:13-17

True meaning and significance is only found in him. You were created for much more, you were created for beauty, your true life is hid in Christ, Take the hand of YESHUA and let him lead you into this lifelong adventure to explore dimensions in him and to reveal your authentic self to you.

May God help my obedience as I journey through the phases of growth.
